Certificate in Medical Physics Program Overview

This is a newly proposed program, pending approval from The University of Texas System and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The anticipated inaugural matriculating class is Fall 2025.

Certificate in Medical Physics Program Overview

This program aims to give qualified graduates in physical sciences and engineering the basic medical physics education to pursue post-graduate clinical medical physics training in a certified residency program. The program will be developed to provide the essential didactic elements of medical physics.  The Certificate program in Medical Physics will be available to those who hold a PhD, or are current PhD candidates in physics, other physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering, and who have undergraduate coursework of one introductory calculus-based physics course and at least three upper level advanced physics courses. This pathway is required for a career in clinical medical physics and enables graduates to successfully sit for the ABR board exam and qualify for CAMPEP-accredited residency programs.

The program objectives of the Graduate Certificate in Medical Physics Program consist of the following:

  • The program will provide comprehensive didactic coursework that meets the requirements set by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), enabling students to qualify for entry into CAMPEP-accredited residency programs.
  • The program will make the medical physics profession more accessible to students in Central and South Texas who hold doctoral degrees related to Physics.
  • The program will enhance the professional and academic competitiveness of its graduates, enabling them to pursue financially and professionally rewarding careers in medical physics, and contribute to the overall quality and innovation of medical physics education at 91PORN.

Certificate Program Governance

Oversight for the routine operations and implementation of the Certificate in Medical Physics Program will be provided as an educational arm of the Graduate Program in Radiological Sciences of the Research Imaging Institute (RII) at 91PORN and the corresponding Graduate program in Radiological Sciences Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS).
