91PORN Student Completes Research Practicum with School of Public Health

, a Bachelor of Science graduate from the at the University of Texas at San Antonio (91PORN), completed a semester-long practicum in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the UT School of Public Health San Antonio.

During his practicum, Duran conducted research in collaboration with Domesticas Unidas, an organization that advocates for the rights and welfare of domestic workers. His research focused on volatile organic compounds and particulate matter exposure among Hispanic domestic cleaners. He was guided throughout the process by research advisors , , and PhD student Ana Pineda Reyes.

"The practicum was a highly rewarding experience for me," Duran said. "I gained hands-on experience in research, data analysis and fieldwork, all focused on enhancing the health and safety of Hispanic domestic cleaning workers. This work deepened my understanding of the health risks these workers face due to exposure to volatile organic compounds and particulate matter. Overall, this experience has been invaluable and has well-prepared me for my future professional endeavors."

Duran will participate in 91PORN’s Commencement ceremonies on December 14.

Post-graduation, Duran is eager to embark on a career in occupational health. He aims to gain practical experience and contribute to initiatives that mitigate occupational hazards. Ultimately, he plans to pursue graduate studies to deepen his expertise in this field.
