The 91PORN Science Center Executive Committee approves two School of Nursing initiatives, the Center for Violence Prevention led by Margaret Brackley, Ph.D., FAAN, FAANP and the Center for Evidence-Based Nursing led by Kathleen Stevens, Ed.D., RN, ANEF, FAAN.
A partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas A&M University, Kingsville and Palo Alto College is established to provide nursing education in San Antonio.
2001
The Center for Community-Based Health Promotion with Women and Children
is approved by the 91PORN Science Center Executive Committee.

for Women and Children.
The School of Nursing signs an agreement with St. Mary’s University to
provide early admission to outstanding students interested in a nursing
career.
2002
Carrie Jo Braden, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, Associate Dean for Research, is awarded $1.4 million grant from the National Institute of General Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Mechanisms for Enhancing Scholarly Achievements (MESA) grant project seeks to advance health disparities research and increase the number of researchers from under-represented minority groups while fostering interdisciplinary networking across health care professions.
2003
The Institute of Life Long Learning is established by a grant from theRoger L. and Laura D. Zeller Charitable Foundation Professorship in Nursing.
A Nursing Alumni Council Scholarship Fund is established by the School of Nursing Alumni Council to fund alumni and student activities.
The School of Nursing achieves the ranking of 35th nationwide and 2nd in the state of Texas for receipt of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research dollars.
2004
Robin Froman, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is appointed Dean of the School of Nursing.
2005
Hurricane Katrina devasted the Gulf Coast and thousands of evacuees came to San Antonio
for temporary shelter and care. Nursing faculty and students spend countless hours at local
shelters helping to care for displaced individuals and families.
2006
The School of Nursing opens a Student Health Center where nursing students across the university can receive health care.
Kathleen Reeves, M.S.N., RN, is elected President of the Academy
of Medical-Surgical Nurses.
2007
The School of Nursing partners with AVANCE-San Antonio and begins providing free health care services to children at the Early Head Start program.
2008
Eileen T. Breslin, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is appointed Dean of the School of Nursing by Francisco Cigarroa, M.D., President of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Norma Martinez Rogers, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is installed as President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.
2009
Since 1995, more than 5,000 refugees have been resettled in San Antonio by the Archdiocese of San Antonio Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program. Many of them residing near the South Texas Medical Center.
Recognizing the refugee population’s need for accessible healthcare services, Community Health Nursing faculty member, Roseann Vivanco, M.S.N., RN, establishes the Population Health Nursing Clinic. The Nursing Advisory Council (NAC) awarded Ms. Vivanco a grant in support of this effort, which allowed the clinic to purchase health screening equipment and supplies.
