Dean Margretta Styles, Ed.D., R.N. appoints student leaders to represent their classes on the curriculum committee.

Twelve students enrolled for the Nursing Fundamentals course when it became available in the summer session of 1970.
1971
The first student body organization is formed.
1972
The Statewide Committee on Continuing Education in Nursing designates the School of Nursing responsible for the continuing education needs of nurses in South Texas.
Dean Margretta Styles, Ed.D., R.N., participates in “groundbreaking” ceremonies for the new UT facilities to be constructed in San Antonio.
The graduate program begins with 28 students.
1973
Patty L. Hawken, Ph.D., RN, FAAN is appointed as Dean of the School of Nursing.
1974
The School of Nursing occupies a new $3.8 million facility in the South Texas Medical Center.
The Family Nurse Practitioner Program opens. It is one of the first in the country to be approved by the American Nurses Association, made possible by funding from the Kellogg Foundation.
1975
"Lady Bird" Johnson talks with Dean Hawken

Mrs. Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson is the featured speaker at the dedication ceremonies for the School of Nursing building.
1976
The School of Nursing establishes one of the first flexible programs in the country to enable non-traditional students to earn their nursing degrees. The National League for Nursing (NLN) commends the School of Nursing on the Flexible Process.
1978
The Routine Obstetrical Clinic becomes operational. This nurse-run prenatal care facility was conceived and implemented through the joint efforts of the School of Nursing, the Medical School, and the Bexar County Hospital District.
