FACULTY:

Jessica Sandoval, MD is an assistant clinical professor for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division at 91PORN. She is double board certified in adult and child psychiatry, with 13 years of experience in child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Sandoval has experience working in the community with underserved/underrepresented populations. Her clinical interests are in trauma/PTSD.

Host Holly Wayment talks to Jessica Sandoval, MD on advice for practitioners on how to talk to parents/caregivers about how to talk to children about really sad things, and also how all of us working in the pediatric world can help ourselves during this heartbreaking time in light of the Nashville school shooting.  We’ll also discuss new psychiatric/therapy resources for children.

  • School Refusal: For youth (5 y/o & up) who have persistent school avoidance or attendance issues due to anxiety and emotional distress
  • Substance Use: For youth (12 y/o & up) whose alcohol or drug use is causing impairment or family conflict
  • Trauma: For youth (5 y/o & up) who have experienced a traumatic event or loss and are having emotional or behavioral consequences such as PTSD

Providing cost-free therapy for teens, ages 10-17, who have experienced a trauma or significant life stress and are having difficulties such as trouble sleeping, upsetting memories, irritability, or other symptoms. Therapy is provided for 18 weeks, by licensed clinicians who are specialized in treating traumatic stress.  The research aspect of the program is that we are using MRI scans to study how brain activity improves during therapy. MRI is a safe medical procedure that has NO radiation, blood draws, or injections. Compensation is provided for the MRIs, questionnaires and interviews.
