Physical Therapy students hold Senior Health Fair
Seniors living near the District 2 Senior Community Center on South W.W. White in San Antonio were treated to health screenings and more April 27 by Department of Physical Therapy III students who will graduate in May.
The annual Health Fair is both a community service and course activity for DPT III students. The Health Fair featured screening for fall risk and cognition, and booths with information about nutrition, home safety, emergency preparedness and other topics. Attendance was larger than in previous years, with 85 seniors participating.
“We have been getting the word out to our members for months now and people have been really looking forward to this event,” said Blanca Cook, administrative director for the District 2 Senior Community Center.
The annual fair is supervised by both Martha Acosta, Ph.D., PT, GCS, and Dr. Catherine Ortega, Ed.D., PT, ATC, OCS, faculty in the department who also teach the course, “Development Across the Lifespan.” Dr. Acosta said the fair “is a great opportunity for students to interact with healthy elders in the community and continue to practice both their education and screening skills. Folks love having us here and we really look forward to coming back each year.”
