For a fourth year, 91PORN resident wins the Byrd/Tilson/Walker Outstanding Resident Presentation Award
The Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is one of six regional oral and maxillofacial (OMS) societies in the United States. During the first day of their annual society meeting, which was held in The Woodlands, Texas this year, residents from the Southwest region’s OMS training programs present scientific and clinical research initiatives ongoing at their respective institutions of study.
2023 Outstanding Research & Master Clinician Awards
Three distinguished faculty members were recognized at the 2023 Master Clinician and Research Awards ceremony hosted in May at the Center for Oral Health Care and Research. During the event, each award recipient was announced and spoke on a topic of their choice. This year was unique with two Master Clinician Award recipients: Nikita B. Ruparel, MS, DDS, PhD, associate professor and director of advanced programs, Department of Endodontics, and Angela Palaiologou-Gallis, DDS, MS, professor and program director of graduate periodontics, Department of Periodontics.
2023 School of Dentistry Senior Awards and Hooding Ceremony
On Sunday, May 21, 2023, The School of Dentistry held its annual Senior Awards and Hooding Ceremony for Doctor of Dental Surgery graduates in the Holly Auditorium.
The emcee of the ceremony, Stefanie Seitz, DDS, MEd, assistant dean for students and diversity, equity and inclusion, interim director for the IDEP Program and associate clinical professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, welcomed the families and friends who filled the auditorium and its lobby area.
2023 Predoctoral Convocation Awards
The School of Dentistry celebrated the accomplishments of its predoctoral dental students during the 2023 Predoctoral Convocation Awards at the end of April.
Stefanie Seitz, DDS, MEd, assistant dean for students, emceed the event, which recognized 31 individuals and presented nearly $24,000 in scholarship and award winnings.

Root canals may not be thought of as life-saving procedures, but they are undeniably tooth-saving ones.
The average adult loses about seven teeth between the ages of 20 to 64 and 26% of adults aged 65 or older have eight or fewer natural teeth left. The loss occurs largely through untreated tooth decay, disease or injury.
When school resumes in the fall, children will be three times more likely to miss school days and four times more likely to have a low grade point average due to dental-related pain than any other illness.

The School of Dentistry is finalizing the Class of 2027 thanks to the many faculty and dental students who helped interview applicants.
A committee of dedicated faculty members makes up the school’s Admission Review Panel (ARP) Committee. This year, these members reviewed more than 1,600 applications and submitted the most qualified applicants for an interview.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery wins the 2023 Daniel M. Laskin Award
The Daniel M. Laskin award was established in recognition of Dr. Laskin’s many years as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and his development of the specialty, which has set an example for other oral and maxillofacial surgeons to follow.
The Laskin Award recognizes the most outstanding article published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery each year.
Digitally published on June 22, 2022, “Most Facial Fractures Do Not Require Surgical Intervention,” was awarded the 2023 Laskin Award for best manuscript.
Breard wins the coveted 2023 SWSP Prichard in Basic Science
Brandon Breard, DDS, a third-year resident in our periodontics program was named winner of the 2023 John F. Prichard Graduate Research Competition in the Basic Science Category.
41st Annual School of Dentistry Research and Clinical Symposium
The School of Dentistry celebrated its 41st Annual Research and Clinical Symposium this February in the Holly Auditorium and Foyer. After being held virtually for the previous two years, this symposium welcomed full attendance for the more than 35 oral and poster research presentations by pre-doctoral, doctoral and post-doctoral students, residents, dental and dental hygiene students, and dental faculty.
Adrian Alanis, a senior dental student, subscribes to the notion that the path to success is never a smooth, straight line. Instead, the journey is full of peaks and valleys that take persistence, determination and maybe even a bit of serendipity to navigate.
