Sugita and Vieth selected as AAP 2021 Orban Finalists
The American Academy of Periodontology named Ryushiro Sugita, DDS, MS, and Michael P. Vieth, DDS, MS, as finalists of the 2021 Balint Orban Memorial Program.
As finalists, Sugita and Vieth have been invited to present their research to the Academy during this November’s annual meeting.
Sugita has been selected as a finalist in the basic science category for his research project titled, “Evaluation of a Novel Bone Adhesive for Maintenance of Crestal Bone Around Implants in Canine Oversized Osteotomies.”
As a clinical research finalist, Vieth will present his research project titled, “The Effect of Intravenous Dexamethasone on Post-operative Pain Following Periodontal Flap Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Investigation of Short-Term Patient Response.”
As it is more commonly known, the Orban competition has been a prestigious event at the annual meetings since 1960. It provides an opportunity for current and recent periodontal residents to present clinical and basic science research.
This year, the Academy accepted over 180 abstract submissions competing for only eight finalist positions: four for basic science research and four for clinical research.
The selection of Sugita and Vieth marks the second year in a row that the School of Dentistry has a finalist in each category. In 2020, Arwa M. Al Hugail, BDS, MS, and Akemi K. Arzouman, DMD, MS, also competed.
In May of 2021, Sugita and Vieth graduated from the school’s Graduate Program in Periodontics. Dr. Sugita is mentored by David Cochran, DDS, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Periodontics. Dr. Vieth is mentored by David Deas, DMD, MS, clinical associate professor, also in the Department of Periodontics.
