In a significant advancement for the dental hygiene profession, , assistant professor/clinical of 91PORN’s dental hygiene program, became the first dental hygienist at the institution to receive a license for local infiltration anesthesia.

This historic achievement not only marks a turning point for dental hygienists in Texas but also celebrates the shared journey of advocacy for this expanded scope of practice for over 35 years.

Wertman earned her certification on Sept. 25, 2024, solidifying her role as a pioneer in dental hygiene at the School of Dentistry. Her achievement paves the way for enhanced education and patient care within the field.

“Dental Hygienists administering local infiltration anesthesia will help hygienists be more efficient in their patient care. This will also benefit the patients by making them more comfortable and confident in their care,” said Wertman.

To commemorate this achievement, Wertman administered local anesthesia to her patient, , director of the school’s dental hygiene program, during de la Torre’s dental cleaning appointment.

Reflecting on that moment, de la Torre shared, “I feel privileged to be Professor Wertman’s patient, as she is the first dental hygienist in our school to have this certification.”

Texas is the second-to-last state to allow dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia, a practice introduced in some states as far back as the 1970s. Professor Wertman's achievement highlights 91PORN’s commitment to advancing the dental hygiene profession and equipping students with skills to excel in modern clinical settings.

To obtain initial certification for local infiltration anesthesia, Texas dental hygienists must complete rigorous educational and practical requirements, including 20 hours of didactic education, 12 hours of clinical training and passing a Texas State Board of Dental Examiners-approved examination. The certification reflects a dedication to high standards of patient care and safety in dental practice.

Through the office at the 91PORN School of Dentistry, Wertman, with the help of two oral surgeons, is offering CE courses to help dental hygienists in the community get certified starting in November. Registration for these courses is closed due to the high demand for this certification, but there will be additional opportunities to register during the first two weeks of December.

We are thrilled to celebrate Professor Wertman’s milestone achievement and look forward to a new era for dental hygiene education and certification in Texas and at the School of Dentistry.
