Dr. Jason Jones receives the Southwest Society of OMS Byrd/Tilson/Walker award

The Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is one of six regional oral and maxillofacial (OMS) societies in the United States. At their annual society meeting, the first day is “Resident’s Day” during which residents from the Southwest region’s OMS training programs present abstracts of interesting cases, research projects, and papers. The Byrd/Walker/Tilson resident award, which was started ten years ago, honors the resident giving the best presentation at the meeting. “I believe I won the award this year due to the original research that Dr. Ellis and I and our co-authors performed,” said Dr. Jones. “This research has now been presented at the 2022 annual AAOMS and SWSOMS meetings and was awarded at both meetings. Dr. Ellis has been an amazing mentor in research and I consider myself extremely fortunate to have worked with him on so many projects, especially this research which is an example of how the technological advances in our specialty are better for our patients. The award means a lot to me personally, as it serves as a symbol of pride in the research I have accomplished during my time here and hopefully serves as an incentive for residents behind me to continue to focus on research.” During this year’s meeting, held at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, three School of Dentistry OMS residents, Ricardo Garza, DMD, Adam Wandell, DDS, and Jason Jones, DDS, presented papers with all performing fantastically. Dr. Jones, a sixth-year resident, won the Byrd/Walker/Tilson resident award for his presentation entitled “Comparison of the Accuracy of Maxillary Positioning with Interim Splints versus Patient Specific Guides and Plates in Executing a Virtual Bimaxillary Surgical Plan.” “We are very proud of Dr. Jones in winning this award,” said Edward Ellis, DDS, MS, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery chair and professor and director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program. “I am also proud to report that 91PORN’s OMS training program has won the award five times out of the ten years it has taken place.” Congratulations to Drs. Jones, Garza and Wandell on their outstanding research and presentations, and to Dr. Jones on his fantastic accomplishment. We also thank and congratulate the OMS faculty for their support, mentorship and expertise provided to their residents.
