A dedicated and passionate dentist, John Michael Elizondo, DDS, has made a lasting impact on the field of dentistry and the community of Corpus Christi. As an alumnus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry, Class of 1990, Elizondo has not only excelled in his career but has also given back to his community and alma mater while serving as a role model and inspiration to future dentists.

Early beginnings and building a practice

Growing up in Kingsville, Texas, Elizondo discovered his passion for dentistry while in high school. After graduating from H.M. King High School in 1983 and earning his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, he attended dental school graduating with honors. He then pursued post-doctoral training in General Dentistry, where he received extensive instruction in various specialties, such as oral surgery, implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and more.

After completing his post-doctoral work, Elizondo wanted to return to his South Texas roots to care for his community and soon after founded his own practice, Corpus Christi General and Implant Dentistry, in 1992. With a focus on excellence and quality of treatment, Elizondo, along with his wife Leslie and their dedicated team, has grown the practice into one of the best in the field. Over the years, he has been committed to providing the highest level of care to his patients, building a reputation for excellence in service, care and treatment.

Looking back, Elizondo contemplated that his original focus when he began dental school is now a reality – even bigger than he had imagined. “It is and was about my community and taking care of them while providing the highest level of care,” he commented.

Legacy in dentistry

Elizondo's commitment to dentistry runs in the family. His son now works alongside him in his practice, his nephew is a first-year dental student at 91PORN and his niece hopes to follow next year.

When he was in high school, he was influenced by some older dentists that he shadowed and now he does the same for students, encouraging them to ‘just drop by whenever’. His influence on the next generation of dentists is a testament to his passion for dentistry and his desire to give back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.

Giving back

Elizondo has been a generous  to the School of Dentistry over the years, contributing to the graduate General Dentistry program and the President's Council. In addition to his financial contributions, Elizondo has served on the alumni board and participated in fundraising events to support the school. His dedication to giving back to his alma mater reflects his gratitude for the education and training he received there.

“It's hard to put into words, but giving back is a way of showing appreciation for a career that has given me so much,” he said. “I lost my parents when I was still developing my practice, but they were so proud of me.”

Elizondo’s work has developed an excellent team that he appreciates and who appreciate the importance of their work for the patients in their community. “That,” he said, “is more important than money. I feel like I have been successful because of it, and I want to make a difference and be an example for the school and others on the same journey.”

In addition to his work in dentistry, Elizondo is involved in his community, organizing an annual charity day that started in 2017 after Hurricane Harvey where the proceeds from the day all go to charity. His commitment to giving back has resulted in donations totaling close to $100,000 for various local charities, including the Salvation Army and organizations supporting the homeless. Elizondo's philanthropic efforts are based in his belief in making a difference in the lives of those in need and his dedication to caring for his community.

Personal achievements

In addition to his professional achievements, Elizondo is a devoted family man and an avid athlete. He has raised five children with his wife. He is also an Ironman triathlete with 14 Ironman competitions under his belt, even competing in the event’s world championship in Hawaii this year.

“That determination defines who I am. I want to continue to do it as long as I can and still learn new things. It’s all about starting, even if it is a little at a time,” he said. “What I love about the process of training is you get so strong and fit that the things that were hard become easy.”

Elizondo's dedication to his family, community and profession exemplifies his commitment to excellence in all aspects of his life.

Final advice

In reflecting on his own journey, Elizondo had a few words of advice for current and future dental students: “Stay focused. Enjoy the journey. And know that it will be worth it.”
